Beadnell

The Beadnell sword dance

The fishing village of Beadnell is located way north of Newcastle in the desolate nothingness that is North Northumberland, and the variant of the rapper dance performed here is probably the simplest known.

The dance is slow and steady, with very simple figures, and thus stands in marked contrast to most other styles of rapper, which are faster and with more complicated figures. Nonetheless, the dance can still be made interesting to an audience as part of a larger performance including different dances, or with expert use of rapper characters to maintain audience engagement.

The simple nature of the dance has led to speculation that it is one of the most conservative styles, and may give an idea of the form of dance from which more modern rapper evolved. The existence of rapper in Beadnell, outside the coalfield and far away from any other rapper village, is a mystery which has yet to be explained.
