Murton

The Murton sword dance

The sword dance as taught by the Lowerson family at Murton is one of the most difficult for established rapper dancers to learn, as it is a sort of wrong-way-round, inside-out sort of a dance with some unique features as well as unusual and confusing names given to the figures.

Sallyport's association with the Murton/Lowerson dance dates back to 1972, when the team first tried to learn it. They liaised with Harry Lowerson III in learning it, but sadly, they eventually decided it too much trouble and abandoned it, although a small hard-core went on to start a revival side in Sunderland called Five Quarter Rapper, dedicated to maintaining the Murton/Lowerson tradition.

Sallyport never gave up entirely, though, and started to relearn Murton in 1997, and it is now part of the team's repertoire. In moments of sadism, the team has been known to inflict it on new recruits as the first dance they learn, especially if the unfortunate mug is a member of the Newcastle Kingsmen.
